Threaded Insert Care: Stop Stripping Bottle Cage and Bolt Holes

You go to swap a bottle cage after a wash and the bolt just spins. No bite, no resistance, nothing. Your stomach drops a little, because carbon and stripped threads sound like an expensive combination. Usually it isn't.

Bottle cage bolts strip more than any other fastener on a bike, mostly because they're small, they get removed and reinstalled a lot, and almost nobody torques them properly. The fix depends entirely on how far gone the thread actually is, and there are three real options below it, not one panic-buy of a new frame.

Why bottle cage and bolt threads strip on a carbon frame

Carbon fibre itself is a poor material to cut threads into directly, so frame builders bond a small metal insert, usually aluminium or brass, into the layup at every bolt location: bottle bosses, mount points, sometimes the derailleur hanger interface. The bolt threads into that metal insert, not into the carbon.

Three things cause damage. Overtightening past the insert's thread strength is the most common, usually from someone without a torque wrench leaning on a hex key until it "feels right." Cross-threading on reinstall is second, easy to do one-handed with a cage held at an angle. Grit or dried lubricant packed into the hole is the third, and it makes the bolt bind partway in, which people then force rather than clean out.

A bottle boss insert has maybe 5 to 6 mm of thread engagement. That's not much margin for error.

How much torque is actually enough

Small bolts on a carbon frame need less torque than most people assume. A torque wrench that reads down to 2 or 3 Nm is a better investment than most tools in a home workshop, and it costs less than a replacement bottle cage.

Treat this table as a starting point, not the final word. If your frame, stem, or bar has a torque value stamped or printed next to the bolt hole, that number wins, every time, even when it disagrees with the table above. Manufacturers spec around their own insert design and wall thickness, and they know it better than a generic chart does.

Reading how bad the damage actually is

Before you decide on a fix, work out what you're dealing with. Thread the bolt in by hand and pay attention to what it does.

If it catches for a turn or two before spinning free, the insert is intact and only the thread crests are rounded off. That's the easy case. If it spins with zero resistance from the very first turn, the internal threads are largely gone, though the insert itself may still be seated properly. If you can see or feel the insert rotating in the hole when you turn the bolt, the bond between insert and carbon has failed, which is a different, more involved repair than a thread problem alone.

Fix 1: thread chasing

For the mild case, a thread-chasing tap of the correct size and pitch (M5 x 0.8 on almost every bottle boss) reforms the existing threads rather than cutting new ones. Run it in by hand, back it off every half turn to clear debris, and use a drop of light oil to help it bite cleanly. No power tools, no rushing.

This works only when the insert is still bonded and undamaged. It will not fix an insert that's spinning, and it won't add back material that's been ground away.

Fix 2: an oversize insert

When the original insert is too damaged to chase, the next step up is drilling the hole out to the next size and pressing or bonding in a larger insert, often stepping an M5 boss up to M6. This demands a straight, centred hole through a wall that might only be a few millimetres thick. Get the angle wrong freehand and you can break through the far side of the boss entirely, turning a bottle-cage repair into a hole in your frame.

If you're doing this yourself, use a drill guide sized for the job, not a hand-held drill and a steady nerve. If that's not equipment you own, this is the point where paying someone who does this regularly is worth more than the money you'd save.

Fix 3: professional bonded repair

A fully stripped or spinning insert needs a proper bonded repair: the old insert removed, the hole cleaned and prepped, a new insert set with structural epoxy, sometimes with a small carbon patch first if the boss wall itself has been damaged. It takes longer, usually a few days once cure time is factored in, and it costs more than the other two options.
It's also the only reliable fix once the insert has come loose from the carbon around it. Ask what epoxy and surface prep the shop uses before you hand the frame over, and ask for photos of the repair before it's closed up. Not every "carbon repair" service does insert work to the same standard.

Worked example: stripped bottle cage boss on a size 54 frame

A rider notices the lower bottle bolt spinning freely right after a wash. They back the bolt out and shine a torch into the hole: no wobble when they press on the insert with a pick, so it's still bonded. The thread crests just look rounded and shiny under the light, consistent with years of a slightly undersized bolt being forced in.

They run an M5 x 0.8 thread-chase tap through by hand, three passes, clearing swarf with a puff of compressed air between each one. The bolt goes back in and torques to 3.5 Nm with a small torque wrench. Total time: about 12 minutes, no parts bought.

Had the insert itself been loose in the hole, the same job would have needed a bonded repair instead, with a multi-day wait rather than a lunch-break fix.

Preventing it from happening again

A small click-style torque wrench that covers the 2-6 Nm range removes almost all of the guesswork, and it pays for itself the first time it stops you overtightening a bottle cage bolt out of habit. Add a small drop of light oil to the bolt threads before reinstalling, not grease-heavy assembly paste, which is meant for clamping-surface friction rather than a threaded bore.

Resist the urge to over-torque a bolt because it "doesn't feel tight enough." A loose bolt is a five-minute fix. A stripped one is a much longer conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use threadlocker on a bottle cage bolt?

A low-strength (blue) threadlocker is fine on a carbon insert as long as you still torque to spec. Avoid high-strength (red) threadlocker, which can bond the insert itself and make future removal difficult, and skip threadlocker altogether on bosses you remove often, like a top-tube bag mount.

Will a stripped bottle cage bolt affect the frame's structural integrity or warranty?

Bottle bosses aren't part of a frame's structural load path, so a stripped thread on its own doesn't weaken the frame. Drilling it oversize or attempting a repair without checking the maker's guidance is a different matter and can affect a warranty claim, so check the terms before you modify anything.

What size are bottle cage bolts?

M5 x 0.8 mm is the standard thread on almost every carbon frame's bottle bosses, with bolts typically 12-15 mm long. Confirm before buying a replacement: a bolt that's too long bottoms out against the back of the insert, and one that's too short won't fully engage the threads.

Can I fix a stripped thread myself, or do I need a shop?

Light thread chasing with a tap and a torque wrench is a reasonable DIY job for most riders. An insert that's spinning or missing material is easy to get wrong on thin carbon walls without the right equipment, so unless you've done it before, that part is usually worth paying a specialist for.
